BV Awarded Alibaba the First Internet-Industry Greenhouse Gas Verification Statement in China

2021 Dec 27

On December 17, Alibaba Group Holding Limited (hereafter referred to as "Alibaba") released the 2021 Alibaba Group Carbon Neutrality Action Report, as the first carbon neutrality action report among domestic Internet technology companies, which demonstrates Alibaba's determination to strengthen its green supply chain, expand its green ecology, and achieve the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals of China, as well as its commitment to creating a sustainable future by virtue of its responsible technologies.

Whereof, Bureau Veritas Group (hereinafter referred to as "BV") provided Alibaba with professional carbon verification services, and the objects subject to verification involved Alibaba's headquarters and global branches; the contents to be verified covered various commercial forms, such as e-commerce, cloud computing, self-owned logistics and offline retail as well as the carbon emission of administration buildings and other venues in 2020. Based on the verification, BV issued Alibaba the first Internet-industry greenhouse gas verification statement (ISO 14064-1: 2018) in China.

According to the 2021 Alibaba Group Carbon Neutrality Action Report, the carbon neutrality of its own operations will have been achieved by 2030, with three major objectives as follows:

01 The carbon neutrality of its own operations will have been achieved no later than 2030

02 The carbon emission intensity of upstream and downstream value chains will have been reduced by half no later than 2030, with the priority given to the realization of carbon neutrality in cloud computing as the green cloud

03 15 years will be taken to drive 1.5 billion tons of ecological carbon reduction with the platforms' assistance

According to the outcome of carbon verification by BV, Alibaba's 2020 greenhouse gas emission amounted to 9.514 million tons, of which direct emission under the control of Alibaba entities and the emission from operational electricity consumption and other activities accounted for 510 thousand tons and 3.710 million tons respectively. For the carbon emission generated by its own operations, Alibaba proposed to achieve the carbon neutrality mainly through targeted energy-efficient and emission reduction measures, vigorous adoption of clean energies as well as carbon elimination and carbon offset, especially the negative emission technologies, and to identify energy transformation, technological innovation and participant economy as the vital pillars for the achievement of carbon neutrality.

BV, a third-party auditing and assessment organization, officially recognized by Climate Bonds, as well as a UN-approved compliant auditing organization of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), is committed to helping Chinese enterprises carry out the green and sustainable services, including organizational quantification and verification of greenhouse gas, life cycle assessment (LCA), corporate dual-carbon strategy, end-and-path consultation and formulation, social responsibility ESG report verification, as well as such whole-process closed-loop energy-efficient and emission reduction measures as energy auditing, construction and auditing of energy management system (EnME), energy efficiency evaluation & verification, in order to help the enterprises to mitigate the impact of climate change in the entire process of operation and thereby achieve the carbon neutrality.
